Mount Eagle Receives United Methodist Foundation Grant for
Spiritual Direction Partnership with Perkins School of Theology

LITTLE ROCK, ARK. (September 17, 2009) -- Mount Eagle Retreat Center, a United Methodist facility near Clinton, recently received a $20,000 grant from the United Methodist Foundation of Arkansas to allow clergy and lay members to obtain Certification in Spiritual Direction in a partnership with Perkins School of Theology at Southern Methodist University.

Mount Eagle is the first off-campus location for the two-year program led by the Perkins Office of Spiritual Formation. Six core courses and a practicum taken in sequence are required for the Certification in Spiritual Direction. The courses will be taught by Perkins faculty under the direction of Dr. Fred Schmidt for three weekends a year over the two-year period, with a class size limited to 17 clergy and laity. This schedule makes participation possible for many people who would not have been able to travel to courses farther from home.

“With more and more “seekers” in our world today – both beyond and even within the church – the need for guidance is imperative. This program will provide its participants opportunities for personal growth as well as professional development; both will benefit our faith communities,” said the Rev. David Fleming, Chair of the Conference Committee on Outdoor Ministries and Senior Pastor at Pine Bluff First United Methodist Church.

“Perkins is such a rich resource for the church, yet its distance from Arkansas is often a barrier for our people,” said UMFA President Jim Argue, Jr. “We’re excited to bring the seminary’s resources to the idyllic setting and great staff located at Mt. Eagle.”

The UMFA grant will cover expenses for Perkins faculty to travel from Dallas, recruitment of participants, partial scholarships and administrative costs. Tuition and room and board for the two-year course will be under $3,000, significantly lower than costs for Arkansans to attend the same program on Perkins campus in Dallas.

“Because of the Foundation’s underwriting, courses on spiritual direction will be offered in the calming quiet of a retreat center. Mount Eagle is a perfect fit because we place so much emphasis on the practice of holy listening,” said Lu Harding, Director of Mount Eagle. “I believe adding a group of called and trained spiritual directors to our Conference can help provide long-term solutions to stress and faith-based crises in our local churches.”

Classes are scheduled on consecutive days, Friday evening through Sunday morning, on the following dates:

Oct. 29-31, 2010
March 11-13, 2011
July 8-10, 2011
Oct. 28-30, 2011
March 9-11, 2012
July 6-8, 2012
